Cotswold Care Hospice

We recently presented a cheque for £1000 to Cotswold Care Hospice in Minchinhampton, and had the opportunity to see the facilities and help available to those with life-threatening illnesses. The Hospice is currently raising money for a new purpose-built building.

Vice Weekend

This year, the Vice Chairman's chosen venue was Albufiera, in the Algarve, Portugal. Couldn't have been a better choice for weather. Fortunately Martin had done his research and there was plenty going on, even though it was the low-season.

Get the low-down here.

Gadabout

Aka "Safari Supper" or a "progressive meal". No-one knows where they will be for their starter, main course or dessert, or with whom they will be dining.... Great way to get to know better the members and their partners from the four clubs.

The secret final venue was Martin's, with a surprise appearance from "Santa Vince" (get me outta here...!)

Area23 Christmas Party

Hosted by Tewkesbury at the Gumstool Inn with National President Gary Smith.

The traditional Christmas meal was followed by an Irish music band, and wartime planes seemed to be some kind of theme....

Firework Display

Another successful, event, despite some rain. It's a lot of effort to put on this event and clean up afterwards, but we think it's worth it! Not only does it provide a safe, organised display for local people, but raises thousands of pounds for charity as well.

More details and pictures are available here.

Going to the Dogs

Swindon Greyhouds. Quite a few of us hadn't done this before, though that didn't seem to have any influence on who was successful on the Tote!

Bizarre Bath

Street theatre rather than anything to do with Bath - but very funny! Lots of jokes and magic tricks with the city and tourists providing the props.

How did that bloody rabbit escape, anyhow...?

Llantwit Major

A "scatter night" where we visit other Tables on our meeting night. OK, not so much of a "scatter" as an invasion, seeing as we all went to the same place....

We've got a long-standing link with Llantwit in South Wales. As testament to this comradeship, we've even got a member who comes from there! (No, not the mascot).

Skittles and Curry - always a winning formula!

Evesham Raft Race

This year we fielded two teams in the Annual Area23 Evesham Raft Race, together with two teams from Ladies Circle.

Despite a valiant effort, the Wotton A-team (consisting of yours truly and Rob Pearce) were pipped to the post in the semi-final - obstructed by an expensive-looking rowing boat in the way (well that's our excuse).

The rafts this year were very well-built by Evesham - nobody fell in the river. Barbecue and refreshments were also kindly provided by Evesham Round Table.

Family Beach Party at Weston-super-Mare

The traditional format - enjoy a few beers and barbecue, sandcastles and a few games of Rounders and Cricket with the kids, followed by a stroll along the pier and Fish-n-Chips.

3 Club Golf

Some frustration on the fairway!? "Just twat it!" Rob yelled at me after no discernable improvement by the 7th hole...

Despite the occasional light rain showers, a good turn out for the 3-Club Golf at the Bull Pen Golf Course, followed by a buffet supper. The evening finished in spectacular style courtesy of a very dramatic thunderstorm.

Prescott Downhill

I understand we came 2nd in this annual Area23 event, organised by Cheltenham RT.

The usual menagerie of gravity-powered vehicles competed in this year's time-trial. Wotton's effort was based on a Kart chassis, skilfully driven by Rob Pearce, Rob Clare and others. There's a short video clip here.

Summer Charity Events

We often help out other organisations with events, especially over the summer. A couple of things on this year included manning the gates at Charfield Fete; running the Barbecue at the Bluecoat School Fair; and helping to marshall the Bluecoat PTA Triathlon.

If I get any more pics, I'll add them.

Boy's Toys

A visit to Martin's Dream Wheels Car Club to play with the cars in his toy-box. Cool! Also did some work on the Wotton Rocket Mk-II (our new Kart) to prepare it for the Precott Downhill Challenge in a few weeks time.

Like being a kid again...

Top Gun!

We were very honoured to have our National President Gary "Maverick" Smith attend our Dinner Meeting on 31st May at the Royal Oak in Wotton. Gary had some great ideas for encouraging membership, to which we'll be giving some careful thought over the coming weeks. Very appropriately, Gary then inducted Rob Pearce as a new member to Wotton Round Table. Welcome Rob!

Following Gary's presentation, we had a fascinating talk on the subject of Hypnotherapy by Bill Hard. During this our Chairman was duly "put under", but despite that we still couldn't get him to pay for a round...

Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Clinic

A big thank you for all those who volunteered for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Registration Clinic we held in Wotton Town Hall on 21st May.

A total of 23 people volunteered to be included on the register, and said that that they will be willing help save the life of a leukemia patient should they be needed.

Thanks also to everyone that helped, and Martin for the loan of the car! (Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Series 1)

74 Club Euromeeting

Six of us from Wotton made the gruelling trip to the exotic location for Warrington for the 2005 Euromeeting.

The event lived up to high expectations, and we had a 3-day party with 120 old friends from all over Europe and South Africa. More

Ladies Night

Despite the fewer numbers able to make it this year, we all had a thoroughly enjoyable evening at Tipputs Inn.

April 05

Handover

Outgoing Chairman Ian Milner handed over the chain of office to Vince Howell, at an exuberant ceremony at Hunters Hall, followed by breakfast at Vince's house at around 3:00am!

Newly elected Chairman for 2005/06 prepares for an "examination" by Ladies Circle. Oo-er! I don't like the look of those rubber gloves....!

Looks like it's gonna be another great year!
