Community Service
Round Tables raise a huge amount of money every year for charities
and local good causes. All the money we raise from the public is
used in this way. As well as some well-known charities, we have
helped young people with projects such as Operation Raleigh; provided
accessibility equipment for individuals and voluntary organisations;
play group equipment; and many other causes.
A big thank you to everyone who has contributed
over the years.
We also offer practical help; some of the things we have done this
year include helping to decorate the after-school room in Charfield;
running a Barbecue for a school event in Wickwar; and helping with
the children's Jubilee Party in Wotton.
As
well as our annual firework display (which raised over £3000
in 2002), in the past we have run a "Duck Race"; organised
the Wotton Pram Race; held a "Dartathon" competition with
local pubs; and so on. As much as we would like to hold these events
annually, we don't currently have enough members to do so - so if
you would like to lend a hand, we'd love to hear from you!
Round Table Children's Wish
Round
Table Children's Wish is a charity which grants wishes to terminally
ill children up to the age of 17 in Britain and Ireland. Based on
a similar scheme started in the U.S., the charity is run mostly
be members of Round Table, Ladies Circle, 14 Club and Tangent. Granted
wishes have included visits to Disneyland, Sky diving, arranging
a "Christmas" early, meeting the Power Rangers, and so
on.
We need help to support us in granting wishes to these special
children who will never experience adulthood, a privilege we all
take for granted. Apart from fundraising, if you think you may be
able to arrange something which could be an experience of a lifetime
to one of these children, we'd love to hear from you. Donations
of unused Air Miles are also gratefully accepted. And of course,
if you know of a child in our area that we might be able to help
in this way, please let us know.
Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust
Founded
in 1974 as the first Register of volunteers willing to donate bone
marrow in circumstances where a match cannot be found within a patient’s
family, The Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust now holds one of the
largest databases of unrelated donors in the world. The Trust owes
its existence to the determination of Shirley Nolan, who established
the Register in an attempt to save the life of her son, Anthony;
a little boy born in 1971 suffering a rare bone marrow disease which
left his immune system unable to fight infection.
Sadly, no matching donor was ever found for Anthony and he died
in 1979 aged seven, but 1,000s of people happy and well throughout
the world today owe their lives to Shirley’s tireless work.
Round Table provided support in setting up the register, and continues
to support the work of the Trust's tissue typing laboratory with
fundraising activities.
